Pianos and Different Regions
The state of California is so big it contains several very different weather systems, and you will find pianos in every one of them, from hot and dry deserts in southeastern California to the rainforest conditions of the coastal redwood forests of northern California. And everything in between: pianos in high alpine towns over 8000 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and pianos at or near sea level wetlands and farmlands of California's Sacramento River Valley.
Each place in California calls for a different approach to maintaining a piano that has been restored at our shop. When we rebuild a piano from California, our customers tell us details about the climate and even details about the land outside the room that will house the piano, including sun exposure, altitude, the presence and prevelance of wind and rain shadows, etc.. The more we know the better, and we make recommendations accordingly.
In the hottest, driest parts of California the piano room might need a humidifier and enclosing doors, if possible. In northern coastal towns, like Arcata, Mckinleyville and Eureka, we might recommend that the piano have a dehumidifying system installed. It certainly depends upon the terrain, the climate, and even the air circulation habits of the house where the piano resides.
Certainly, pianos in California, especially pianos that are in need of repair, need to be checked and monitored, for example, for mold in mold prone areas of the coast, like Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Mendicino, Fort Brag, Fortuna, Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville, Trinidad, and Cresent City. Keeping the piano in good repair -- complete piano restoration might be what's needed -- certainly helps to protect and preserve the piano. And while the piano is away being restored, it will be a good time to properly clean and dryout the room. Cleaning and airing the room will go a long way in improving the repaired piano's environment.
