Department of Music
Washington University in St. Louis

Faculty members in the Department of Music at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri invite their prospective students to "enrich their education through the study of music," such a warm invitation to entertain the idea that an academic education means more than just a ticket for profits, more emphasis on a broad education that will make life richer, more meaningful. This type of learning, of course, includes music education, music theory, with as many free piano performances one can pack in between classes and potlucks and football games, all meant first and foremost, to enrich the life of the student, the campus, the community, the nation, the world. Music -- including piano performance -- teaches us and reminds us of the more worthwhile human pursuits and pastimes, and the real need for the study and perpetuation of the arts and sciences.

The Department of Music at Washington University Mission Statement:

The Department of Music is dedicated to undergraduate and graduate training in music, both as a performing art and humanities discipline. Solo and ensemble performing opportunities are abundant, and available to all Washington University students. We have a wide array of programs for majors and nonmajors, including jazz, voice, and composition, and vital course offerings in classical music theory and history as well as popular and non-Western musics. We encourage students to explore intersections between music and other disciplines such as literature, philosophy, psychology, and medicine, explorations that are fostered by the interdisciplinary curriculum at Washington University.

The Missouri Symphony Society

From the Missouri Theater Center for the Arts web site:

For the last thirty-seven years, the Missouri Symphony Society (MOSS) has dedicated itself to providing musical performances of the highest caliber and to educating central Missouri youth in the area of music.

Since its founding in 1970 by Hugo and Lucy Vianello, the not-for-profit Society has evolved from its sponsorship of such ensembles as the Missouri Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Missouri Youth Band, and the Missouri Youth Chorus to sponsorship of mid-Missouri's only professional resident symphony orchestra, the Missouri Symphony Orchestra. This ensemble is comprised of professional musicians from throughout the United States and around the world, and provides a popular eight-week summer music festival during the months of June and July.

The Missouri Symphony Orchestra has established a reputation for musical excellence and has continued to expand its audience through chamber music outreach programs, youth programs, and tours around the state and beyond. Many distinguished artists have performed with the Missouri Symphony Orchestra, including Andre Watts, Andreas Klein, Nelson Padgett, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg...

The Missouri Theater Center for the Arts is located in Columbia, Missouri.
