Regulating the Tone of the Piano

One of the primary reasons musicians and piano owners have their pianos rebuilt is to recapture or to improve the tone quality of their piano. To some extent, the tone quality is completely subjective, depending upon the desires of the surrounding musicians or of the pianist, or producer, or composer. Technicians work on tone quality against an invisible continuum -- from sharp brilliance to soft mellowness -- and for the piano technician, somewhere on this continuum, and for each note, the subjectively "perfect" tone quality is to be found.

Much of the work for tone quality is done through voicing the hammers. According to Arthur Reblitz:

When the fine quality hammers are made, the felt is glued around the wood molding under considerable pressure. This pressure puts tension around the outside of the hammer and compresses the felt inside. The tension and compression provide the resilience which is necessary for good tone quality. It also keeps the hammer striking point from going flat prematurely under heavy use. (Reblitz, Arthur. Piano Servicing, Tuning, and Rebuilding, 1976: 80)
