Music in 18th-Century Georgia

There is a relatively new text entitled Music in Eighteenth-Century Georgia, written by Ron Byrnside about the history of music in Georgia, part of a three volume set spanning over 300 years.

Different periods of American history are covered in this text, describing the musical trends and inventions that accompanied the historical unfolding of the colonial period in Georgia in its particular position in relation to other other U.S. regions, states and territories. Attention to migration's impact on musical styles, including different continental migrations with their different social institutions is given, including the expelled Salzburgers from Germany and the influence of African American strife, life and unique, religious interpretation.

From the University of Georgia Press web site:

By piecing together information drawn from court records, personal diaries and journals, newspaper notices, estate inventories, wills, and other historical documents, Ron Byrnside constructs a fascinating history of both the secular and sacred music of the colonial period with much of the material new to scholarship.

Music in Eighteenth-Century Georgia is the first in a projected three-volume set. Volume Two will deal with music in antebellum Georgia, while Volume Three will focus on music in Georgia during the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Ron Byrnside is Dana Professor of Music at Agnes Scott College. He is the author of Music: Sound and Sense and coauthor of Contemporary Music and Music Cultures.
