The importance of brand names in the piano industry is well known. Over the years certain piano manufacturing company names have become synonymous with high quality materials, professionally trained craftspeople, and consistently superior product lines.
When many of the pianos that we repair and restore were built, there were many well known and respected brand name companies in the United States and Europe. As the industry inevitably downsized in the early decades of the 20th century, many companies were bargained off and traded between several larger players. Some of the piano brands were kept in production. Other names along with the inventories were retired and liquidated.
Nevertheless, since there were so many highly respectable names in the piano industry and since so many quality pianos were built during both the 19th and 20th centuries, there are many pianos that come to our shop for repair and restoration that truly deserve the attention. In fact it is rare that we meet a piano we don't like. This is especially true with American made pianos, but it is true with European and Asian piano companies as well.
Repairing pianos of various brand names is fun for our company staff and interesting because we get to see the various ways piano technology has been applied. The records we keep about the different piano companies, their brands and models make for an interesting piano history archive.
